A history of cultural relations between Ethiopia and France: a commemorative book marking the 120th anniversary of the Ethiopian-French Alliance (AEF) in Addis Ababa (1907–2027)

The Alliance Ethio-Française (AEF) in Addis Abeba was founded in 1907, at a time when the French language and culture had a strong presence in the Ethiopian capital. It has since been both a key player and a witness to cooperation between Ethiopia and France, as well as to the history and evolution of Ethiopian cultural life and artistic creation throughout the20th century and the early 21st century.

To mark the 120th anniversary of the historic establishment of Piassa, the AEF, in partnership with the French Centre for Ethiopian Studies (CFEE), is planning to publish a reference book with the aim of offering a unique exploration of Ethiopia’s intellectual, linguistic, cultural and artistic history, through the lens of relations between France and Ethiopia. This work, which will be bilingual (French-English) and visually rich, is intended for a wide audience: Ethiopian, French-speaking and international readers interested in the modern and contemporary history of Ethiopia, as well as in the role of France and the French language in its political, social and cultural development.

This book will draw on the AEF’s archive collection (photographs, newspapers, documents, posters, etc.) as well as the CFEE’s press collection.

Several formats for contributions are envisaged:
• Feature articles : historical analyses, thematic overviews;
• Focus pieces : targeted insights into a subject, event or figure;
• Boxes : specific information, anecdotes or precise contextual details.

The aim is to illustrate and explain the intensity and evolution of Franco-Ethiopian cultural relations, highlighting the various roles played by the AEF in this unique history.

A number of topics may be covered (the list below is intended as a guide and is not exhaustive): the history of the Ethiopian-French Alliance in Addis Ababa (its foundation, its missions, its development, its impact on the dissemination of the French language and culture in Ethiopia, etc.); Ethiopian cultural production and French contributions to certain evelopments, through education, literature, the arts, the media, architecture, urban planning and digital creation; cultural exchanges: translations of works, the influence of artistic movements, the role of intellectuals, artists and Francophone institutions (Lycée Guébré-Maryam, CFEE, the Alliance Ethio-Française in Dire Dawa, etc.); the role of the French-speaking Ethiopian community etc.

You may also suggest topics and potential authors to cover them. We strongly encourage co-authorship and Franco-Ethiopian writing collaborations.

Requirements for contributions

We are inviting researchers, writers or artists, specialists in cultural studies, art historians or experts in French language dissemination policies, as well as those involved in Franco-Ethiopian cooperation, to submit contributions in one of the following formats:

1. Feature article (max. 20,000 characters or 3,500 words), with a selection of illustrations, based on a scholarly approach whilst remaining accessible to a non-specialist audience (e.g. The Architectural History of Addis Ababa).

2. Feature (600 words or 3,600 characters): focus on a specific theme (e.g. The French-Language Press in Ethiopia under Haile Selassie).

3. Box (200 to 300 words or 1,500 to 1,800 characters): background or anecdote (e.g. Arthur Rimbaud in Harar).

Deadlines and practical details:

For feature articles
• 31 July 2026: Submission of an abstract of 200 to 300 words or 1,200 to 1,800 characters (in French or English), specifying:
o The provisional title;
o The period or theme covered;
o The archival sources envisaged (if applicable);
o A brief biography of the author.

For the focus sections and sidebars: a brief explanation of the topic will suffice.
•Summer 2026: Submission of proposals to the scientific committee and feedback to authors.
• 30 November 2026: Submission of full texts (in accordance with length and style guidelines).

Une histoire des relations culturelles entre l’Éthiopie et la France : livre anniversaire des 120 ans de l’Alliance éthio-française (AEF) d’Addis Abeba (1907-2027)

L’Alliance éthio-française (AEF) d’Addis Abeba apparaît en 1907, dans un contexte marqué par une forte présence de la langue et de la culture françaises dans la capitale éthiopienne. Elle est dès lors à la fois acteur et témoin de la coopération entre l’Éthiopie et la France, mais également de l’histoire et de l’évolution de la vie culturelle et de la création artistique éthiopiennes tout au long du XXe siècle et du début du XXIe.

À l’occasion des célébrations des 120 ans de l’implantation historique de Piassa, l’AEF, en partenariat avec le Centre Français des Études Éthiopiennes (CFEE), envisage la publication d’un livre de référence dans le but de proposer une exploration inédite de l’histoire intellectuelle, linguistique, culturelle et artistique de l’Éthiopie, à travers le prisme des relations entre la France et l’Éthiopie. Cet ouvrage, à la fois bilingue (français-anglais) et visuellement riche, s’adressera à un public large : lectrices et lecteurs éthiopiens, francophones et internationaux intéressés par l’histoire moderne et contemporaine de l’Éthiopie, ainsi que par le rôle de la France et de la langue française dans sa construction politique, sociale et culturelle.

Cet ouvrage pourra s’appuyer sur le fonds d’archives (photographies, journaux, documents, affiches, etc.) de l’AEF comme sur le fonds presse du CFEE.

Plusieurs formats de contribution sont envisagés :
• Des articles de fond (Environ 5-6 pages) : analyses historiques,      synthèses thématiques ;

• Des focus (1 page max.) : éclairages ciblés sur un sujet, un événement ou une personnalité ;

• Des encadrés (¼ à ⅓ de page) : informations ponctuelles, anecdotes ou contextes précis.

L’objectif est de donner à voir et à comprendre l’intensité et l’évolution des circulations culturelles franco-éthiopiennes, en mettant en lumière les différents rôles joués par l’AEF dans cette histoire singulière.

Plusieurs sujets pourront être abordés (la liste ci-après constitue des suggestions et n’est pas exhaustive) : l’histoire de l’Alliance éthio-française d’Addis Abeba (sa fondation, ses missions, son évolution, son impact sur la diffusion de la langue et de la culture françaises en Éthiopie, etc.) ; la production culturelle éthiopienne et les contributions françaises à certaines évolutions, via l’enseignement, la littérature, les arts, les médias, l’architecture, l’urbanisme ou encore la création digitale ; les circulations culturelles : traductions d’oeuvres, influence des mouvements artistiques, rôle des intellectuels, des artistes et des institutions francophones (Lycée Guébré-Maryam, CFEE, Alliance éthio-française de Dire Dawa, etc.) ; le rôle de la communauté éthiopienne francophone etc.

Attentes pour les contributions

Nous sollicitons des chercheur·ses, écrivains ou artistes, spécialistes des études culturelles, historien.nes des arts ou des politiques de diffusion du français, ainsi que des acteur·rices de la coopération franco-éthiopienne, pour proposer des contributions sous l’un des formats suivants :

1. Article de fond (max. 20 000 signes ou 3500 mots), avec une sélection d’illustrations, fondé sur une approche scientifique tout en restant accessible à un public non spécialiste (ex. : l’Histoire architecturale d’Addis-Abeba).

2. Focus (600 mots ou 3600 signes) : éclairage sur un thème précis (ex. : La presse francophone en Éthiopie sous Haïlé Sélassié).

3. Encadré (200 à 300 mots ou 1500 à 1800 signes) : contexte ou anecdote (ex. : Arthur Rimbaud à Harar).

Calendrier et modalités pratiques :

Pour les articles de fond

• 31 juillet 2026 : Envoi d’un résumé de 200 à 300 mots ou 1 200 à 1 800 signes (en français ou en anglais), précisant :
o Le titre provisoire ;
o La période ou le thème abordé ;
o Les sources archivistiques envisagées (si applicable) ;
o Une brève bio de l’auteur·e.

Pour les focus et les encadrés : un court message expliquant le sujet suffira.

• Eté 2026 : Soumission des propositions au comité scientifique et retours aux auteur·ices.

• 30 novembre 2026 : Remise des textes complets (respect des consignes de longueur et de style).
